Urgent fire checks urged on schools

Following the recent disaster at the Grenfell Tower, government are being urged to order fresh fire safety checks on all school buildings.

The National Union of Teachers, Fire Brigades Union and Association of Teachers and Lecturers are calling for cladding to be analysed urgently, although currently only buildings with cladding over 4 stories are being investigated.

Also included in the request is for ministers to bring forward legislation to require sprinklers to be fitted to all new schools.

With the sheer scale of this operation it may be years before all buildings have been inspected.
